About Ground State
General
Ground State is a 2D puzzle platfomer being developled for PC,Mac, & Linux
In Ground State, you play as Fermi; a doodle of an electron that gets lost in a bookshelf and must find their way back home. In an attempt to return home, you will travel through various worlds full of characters, symbols, and layered metaphors. Can you solve the puzzles along your journey in an attempt to discover deeper meaning as you help Fermi get back to the Ground State?
Setting
Ground State starts in Fermi's home, a lab notebook on a bookshelf, but things quickly take a turn for the worse and Fermi is sucked out through a "Bookworm-hole" into another book! Ground State's story unfolds across multiple books as Fermi tries to find his way back home.
The layout of the different levels in Ground State is analogous to a Mario style game. The entire game takes place on a bookshelf. Each book on the shelf is a "world", and each chapter in a book is a "level". Players travel from Book to Book via Bookworm-holes
Presentation
On its surface, Ground State is about quantum physics, but it quickly moves further and explores topics of semiotics; specifically how symbols create meaning in different contexts such as music, mathematics, and computer science (think AI) and the parallels that all these languages share. Ground State also explores whether or not universal truths about the Cosmos can be perfectly encoded in symbols.
Imagine taking a chapter from each book on a bookshelf and weaving them together to tell a larger, complete story. Though the subject matter of each book may be completely different, they come together to tell a deeper more meaningful truth. A story where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. That is our goal with Ground State.
Each book world has a different aesthetic meant to represent the different author's writing style. While actual words and sentences do appear throughout the game in various parts, their overall use is sparse. Instead we present each book world as if it were from the perspective of a reader; their mind's eye so to speak. Ground State attempts to explore that magical point where symbols and sets of symbols transition to a higher order and evoke meaning; becoming more than what they were.
